Nagasaki’s Chinatown
If you’ve been to a decent Chinatown, whether that be somewhere in Asia or California, you’re not going to be all that thrilled with the Chinatown in Nagasaki. People seem to rave about it, yet it was just another Chinatown to me. Perhaps, I didn’t care for the “upscale” authentic Chinese food and modern buildings infused with Chinese architecture and decor. That or the fact there was no special event going on which made the Chinatown area look rather bland, save for its neon entrance sign.
I must say that Nagasaki’s Chinatown is probably the go to spot when events are present. Think Chinese New Year and any other event that Nagasaki may be known for. It’s just a shame that I wasn’t there at the right time to see the delights that Nagasaki’s Chinatown could offer me when it’s fully lit up and decorated.
But it wasn’t a biggie. I wasn’t concerned at all since I prefered to visit older historical buildings in Nagasaki.
For those not into upscale eateries, Chinatown does have at least two vendors that sell fried goods. One vendor is on the more expensive side, but you get what you pay for in taste and quality. The other vendor, while cheap and affordable, can leave you feeling queasy.
Although I didn’t spend much time in Chinatown, I can confidently say it’s a place you won’t regret skipping have you visited other Chinatowns before. Should you decide to visit, do take a moment to enjoy the scenery of the water that’s adjacent to one of the Chinatown entrances.
