The Cave Temples of Dunhuang

There’s a place I’d like to see in real life if I could. It’s known as the cave temples of Dunhuang. Located in northwestern China, I’ve heard it’s a bit difficult to get to but well worth the difficulty. For now, I’m content with coming as close as I can to experiencing the caves of Dunhuang.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to experience the cave temples of Dunhuang from the comfort of my own state. Yes, you read that right. I didn’t need to fly to China to get a taste of the caves temples thanks to The Getty. They were holding an exhibit on the caves and I knew I just had to go there.

While I don’t remember everything about the exhibit, I still have photos and memories from the event. I enjoyed this event very much because I was clueless as to when I’d ever have an opportunity to be in China to see these magnificent caves with surreal Buddhist art.

Despite this exhibit being a replica, it looked very real and felt very real. Perhaps someone that visited the actual caves in Dunhuang would notice the difference but I found this replica experience to be amazing.

There was something very spiritual and ancient about it. I can only imagine all of the feels one would experience at the actual site of the cave temples in Dunhuang.

Amazing, isn’t it? Have you visited the cave temples of Dunhuang? If yes, please share your experience with me!
